Unravelling Chill Terminal 002: Tracing Its History, Authorship, and Conservation Status in Relation to Gerald van der Kaap's Chill Cave (1992)

Abstract
This research examines the material and historical significance of Chill Terminal 002, a prototype of media art installation from Gerald van der Kaap’s Chill Cave (1992), housed at the Eye Filmmuseum. Drawing on archival materials, literature, condition analysis, case studies, and artist interviews, it reveals the artwork’s deterioration relative to its desired state. The study proposes tailored conservation approaches to preserve its historical value and the artist's intention within the Chill Cave, which is a Gesamtkunstwerk.
이 연구는 네덜란드 암스테르담에 위치한 아이 필름뮤지엄(Eye Filmmuseum)이 소장하고 있는 헤랄드 반 데르 캅(Gerald van der Kaap)의 미디어 아트 설치 작품 '칠 케이브(Chill Cave, 1992)'의 프로토타입인 '칠 터미널 002(Chill Terminal 002)'의 물질 및 역사적 중요성을 고찰합니다. 아카이브 자료, 문헌, 상태 분석, 사례 연구 및 작가 인터뷰를 바탕으로 본 연구는 해당 작품이 의도된 상태에서 얼마나 노후화되었는지를 밝혀냅니다. 또한, 게잠트쿤스트베르크(Gesamtkunstwerk, 종합예술작품)로서의 '칠 케이브' 내에서 작품의 역사적 가치와 작가의 의도를 보존하기 위한 맞춤형 보존 방안을 제안합니다.
